So that last 3 weeks in a row I’ve run the park with an old co-worker. She’s a 1/2 marathoner and a fast runner, so running with her is a good work out for me to build my strength.
The first week I felt great, and the run went by really quickly. We had a lot to catch up on and I managed to keep up with her pace. We did the 6+ish miles in 54 minutes. The second week, was a little bit colder, but still a great day for a run. For the last mile or so I had an awful stich in my side and at the end it was hard for me to catch my breath, but we still managed to do it in 54 minutes again.
This week, I felt awful. I had worked out the day before and felt weak for hours afterwards, like I had just run the 1/2 marathon not just done Elliptical and Free-Weights. We started off fast, but about half way through I thought there was no way we were running much faster than 9.5 minute miles. My inner ankles were hurting, an over pronation sympton I’ve pretty much combated, and my knee started to ache from the change in my gait. We didn’t have as much to keep us chatting the whole way through either, but still before I knew it we were approaching the entrance to the resevoir. When Andrea looked down at her watch we’d done the park in 53 minutes. I couldn’t believe it. The worst I’d felt in 3 weeks and yet I’d stayed under 9 minute miles for the whole run.
I walked away from the run feeling like I was stronger than I thought, which was great.
I don’t think I’m running as much as I should be, I tend to sumplement more with elliptical, which I think keeps my ankles stronger, but I should still be doing more shorter runs. I’ve finally gotten back in to spin class- which is great and the perfect cross training.
Saturday I’m planning another longer run and I’m going to test out eating the gel packs to see how my body reacts since I plan to use them during the race.
Lastly, now that I’ll be running outside more in the winter I’m going to need gear! Ooh, shopping opportunity!
